Tom Baxter

Thursday 16th October 2014

Tom Baxter was one of those last minute gigs, booked two weeks before the date, after we saw that there was a wee gap before he headed to Edinburgh. And in hindsight what a wonderfully inspired decision!

I'm one of those who fell in love with Tom Baxter's voice and lyrics after hearing Better all those years ago and therefore jumped at the chance to book him as part of his tour promoting the latest album The Uncarved Block.

You knew what sort of a night was in store when, alongside his stool and selection of guitars, Tom placed a Standard Lamp - actually went pretty well with our backdrop we thought! It set an intimate feel for a night of personal almost confessional tales of exploration and self analysis. And you could hear a pin drop.

Standing at the door as the audience leave it was truly surprising how the night had left a mark on so many. Again it is perhaps the almost unique experience of watching an artiste as if they were in your front room; Sessions provides a venue that is very up close and personal and Tom's emotional performance was genuinely as good as a solo artiste is going to get.

Highlights? Oh so many but for me Maybe Love is Not Enough, of course, a wonderful version of Better but I'll settle for The Boy Beneath the Stone. Great set Tom.

It was maybe a last minute booking but it was worth every penny and next time we will fill that little room for sure.
